A few searches here point to Gen 2 or Gen 3, but not having any luck for my '96. Any pointers much appreciated.

Its basically the same procedure as a 1990 to 2002 Honda Accord 4 cylinder. Do you have a repair manual? There are 2 timing belts on it. It has the main belt & a balance shaft belt. The water pump is also driven by the timing belt. It should also be replaced. The crank bolt is a PITA to remove.

The crank bolt is a PITA to remove.

otto888man is dead on about the crank bolt being a pain to remove. The problem is that the crank bolt is torqued so tight that the crankshaft wants to turn before the bolt loosens. There is a special tool that will hold the crank still while you loosen the crank bolt. The tool is used with a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar or 1/2 in drive rachet. It looks like this:

Auto part Plastic

I purchased one from Amazon for anound $25.00, but you might could borrow one from Autozone.

I do NOT have the repair manual. Might you have a link to a procedure? I did find some very good videos for gen 2 here. Or is there a book/dvd I can purchase? Is this do-able by an avg diy-er?

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate changing a timing belt, balance shaft belt, & water pump in my driveway as having about an 8.43 degree of difficulty. You will need a floor jack and a pair of jack stands. You have to remove the driver's side engine mount, so you need be able to jack up the engine to take the load off the mount bolt. I strongly advise that you purchase a copy of the factory service manual. On ebay a CD copy of the Honda factory manual costs about $30.00:

Also on ebay you can get a hardcopy version of the factory service manual for about $60.00:

I paid the extra for the hardcopy book and I am really glad I did. I have used it a lot.

Good luck !!

I think you have to pay for it but ericthecarguy.com has an excellent video on an Accord timing belt replacement.

Thanks! They do "summarize" a bit more than I'd like. I guess I need to get the CD to look up the other referenced pages. But even then, their one sentence steps could be a paragraph for me! Very do-able, but that at bit more verbose explanation might be good for me the 1st time through.

If this your first timing belt, I suggest you pay someone to do it. It's not horrendous but I wouldn't say it is for a newbie. It really depends on your skill level. There are two belts.
If this not your first, but is your first F motor belt, be aware of the following. You need to put the pin in the back of the motor and make sure the balance shaft is aligned right. Pay attention to the bolts you remove. There are some different length ones in the timing cover.
I highly recommend the NAPA timing belt kits. They are high quality, and include good instructions.
For a skilled mechanic in a shop this is still a several hour job.

Ok.. bumping this one again.

Local shop quoted $700 including parts. A search on rockauto shows the most expensive kit as $104 -- https://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=2596244&cc=1169388&jnid=454&jpid=23

Is $600 for labor about right? He mentioned it would be about a 4 hour job. At $600 I tend to get more motivated to figure it our for myself. I just replaced the front passenger side axle and wheel bearing. Maybe not in the timing belt league, but for $600 I can afford some "education". Thoughts.

(I have the factory service manual, a fair bit of tools, a 1/2 impact wrench, basic jack, pair of stands, etc)

You have to understand how mechanics price jobs. The cost of parts are doubled to you. They are not going to order the cheapest or best parts they can find. They are going to order what their local supplier has in stock and can deliver today. They might think about one brand vs another, but often not.

So you are being charged 200 or so for parts, and 500 for labor. That price might be a little high for your market, or not. I don't know.

You didn't say whether you've done a timing belt before or not. How can we advise you?

Mechanics are expensive. You can either afford to have qualified mechanics work on your car, or not.

If anyone needs help with this -- let me know. I have now completed a timing belt, balancer belt, both tensioners, and water pump replacement. The hardest part is getting the lower TB cover off and back on. My IR231C popped the crankshaft bolt right loose. I do have https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001O2ZGQ6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 throughout my airlines and really believe it makes a big difference.

I used the AISIN kit from Amazon. $110 or so. Mostly made-in Japan parts.

Can anyone tell me how are the seals in the old timing cover, after you removed? I did not know if they get torn up or not & if I need to order in new ones before I take it apart . I hate to take apart & leave it sit while waiting on parts. Or are they usually in fine shape & reusable?

Usually they are in fine shape after you remove them. The only thing is sometimes the seals on the lower timing cover wont stick back to the lower cover you can make it stick using silicone adhesive to make it stick to the track. Good luck.

I chickened out & ordered Honda belts, water pump both tension-er pulleys and the 3 oil seals, and 2 springs. I see a little bit of oil down in spark plug wells, so it looks like I'll be doing the o-rings also, since the new upper well gaskets did not stop oil leak 100%. I think the biggest hurdle so far was the lower cover, to pull out. (Manual was no help here) Not looking forward to reinstall. Now trying to figure out how to get seals out since there is no room to work. I'm open to suggestions if anyone else has done this. This is taking much much longer than I anticipated, & if I knew I could trust someone to do this right, the $ would be well worth it.

Stab the seals with a nail or a tool and pry them out. or screw a screw into them and pull out.

Update; while I was into it, I had to replace the o-rings for spark plug well oil leak, under valve rockers. long story short I broke off one of the 6mm bolts on the intake side(one of the four) because I watched a youtube video :duh:, and after reading the service manual, after the fact, I see all the adjusters should be backed off, to relieve pressure. So I ordered 4 new bolts to be safe. Did not want to break off when re-installing. Took 4 extra days to figure out a way to get the hardened piece out.(without removing head)Just about ready to finish up, & trying to figure out best way to get lower plastic cover back in place? Any tips?
